Preschool Assistant

Background

Polstead Preschool is a parent-run preschool set in the hall at St Margaret's Institute in North Oxford. Polstead Preschool can accommodate up to twenty-four children aged from 2 to 4 years. This mixed age group uses the same indoor and outdoor spaces, but enjoy different group time activities. We offer morning sessions from 9am to 12 noon and afternoon sessions from 12 to 3pm.

Polstead Preschool is run by highly-qualified and skilled practitioners with the help of a parents committee, which voices its needs and opinions at our termly committee meetings.

The objective of our preschool is to provide a safe, exciting, happy and caring environment for the children. We recognise that each child's needs may be different and we will encourage each child's physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills through their play.

The Job

We are looking to recruit a Preschool Assistant to work a minimum of approximately 13 hours per week, with additional ad hoc work to cover staff absences. Hours fluctuate according to the number of children in attendance. Days can be negotiated.

Pay is £9.15 to £9.75 per hour.

Reporting to the Supervisor, as the Preschool Assistant, you will:

  • Work as a team member in order to provide safe, creative, stimulating and age appropriate play opportunities, including preparing activities, organising programmes and arranging equipment.
  • Establish positive relationships with all children in order to enable them to play and learn together cooperatively, increase their self confidence and realise their creative potential.
  • Prepare and offer the children a selection of snacks and provide support in developing independence at lunchtime (children bring in packed lunches).
  • Take part in special events, outings and visits.
  • Build and maintain positive and effective relationships with parents/carers.
  • Keep confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff that is learnt as part of the job.
  • Actively participate in the planning and implementation of the curriculum to suit the children’s needs and stages of development, supporting and promoting individual learning.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of Polstead Preschool.
  • Fulfil the role of the Key Person under the guidance of the Supervisor.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings and any further training programs, as required.

Essential requirements

  • Minimum NNEB / NVQ Level 3 qualifications in Early Years.
  • With our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, the successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced criminal record check via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
